Fact: Occupation Occupation Story Rev. George Bright served as pastor of churches in Philipsburg, Pa.; Shelby, Strasburg-Winfield, Mt. Zion-Mifflin, all in Ohio; and for many years was a supply pastor after his retirement from active ministry. He also officiated at the weddings and baptisms of many of his children and grandchildren. His excellent voice engendered a love of talent for music throughout his family, although none ever attained the singing ability which gave him the title "Sweet Singer of Wittenberg." Singing in a quartet and giving solo concerts helped to pay his way through Divinity School and his scrapbook of concert programs attests to his popularity. While serving in Strasburg, he built up the choir until it was famous in the community. His voice was never so much appreciated in those endeavors, though, as it was the European trip he made with his father, who was sent as a delegate to a World Sunday School Convention. He often related stories of this trip to his children and grandchildren; an especially well-remembered tale was his impression of the choir singing in the Crystal Palace in London. Although he was devoted to his religion, studies, and music, George Bright should be remembered as a tough, sturdy man who tilled the soil in the heat of an Ohio summer and chopped wood to ward off the cold of the winter. He and his children supplemented a meager country parson's income by raising White Leghorn chickens and gardening acres during his service at Mt. Zion. In 1925, the family moved to Lucas, Ohio, and at this writing "Grandpa" (1964) still lives in the house that was their home. October will see his 95th birthday and it is a rare treat to visit with him for, altough these years have weighed heavily on him physically, his mind is alert and ready for a discussion at any time. His love for words is well expressed by a vocabulary to be envied by most. Mifflin Township, Ashland, Ohio, United States
