About Reverend Thomas Cheever

From research by Kristin C. Hall:

"Thomas was a Clergyman. He graduated from Harvard College in 1677 and lived to be the oldest surviving graduate of Harvard College[27,29]. He began preaching at Malden on 14 February 1679/80 and was ordained there on 27 July 1681 as a colleague of Michael Wigglesworth (brother of Abigail Wigglesworth, the wife of Benjamin Sweetser). He was dismissed in 1686 from this church when he moved to Rumney Marsh. From 1686 until 1715, he was in comparative retirement there. In 1715, he was chosen as pastor of the newly gathered church at Rumney Marsh. Thomas also taught school in Rumney Marsh as early at 1709, "teaching reading, writing and cyphering at his home to an average of twenty pupils."[30]

"His early ministerial life was clouded by grave charges" but in 1722 and 1735 he was invited back to his old church in Malden to preach there. These sermons were published in 1726[31]. On 24 September 1747, due to his advanced age of 89, he was relieved at his own request and Nathaniel Oliver, Jr. was appointed scribe to keep the records and proceedings of the church. On 13 April 1748, The Reverend William McClenachan was appointed associate pastor to Rev. Cheever and he was formerly installed on 21 December 1748 as Cheever¹s colleague[31]. "
