Rex Whitcomb, age 79, a resident of Florala, Ala., passed away in a Florala hospital Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999.
Mr. Whitcomb was a native of Florala and son of the late Daniel Ray and Dora Cawthon Whitcomb. He was a member and lifetime deacon of the First Baptist Church of Florala. He was a former elder of the Presbyterian Church and served as a chaplain assistant in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. A graduate of Covington County High School and later a graduate of the LSU School of Banking, he was president of the Bank of Florala until his retirement. He served on the Covington County Mental Health Board and the Florala Water Works Board several years ago.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Cox Whitcomb of Florala; daughter, Kathryn Whitcomb of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; brother-in-law, James M. Cox of Knoxville, Tenn., and Lamar Cox of Brooksville, Fla.; five nephews; and four nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, with the Rev. Teddy Avery officiating. Interment will follow in Florala Greenwood Cemetery.
