About Rfn. Frank William Yearbury

Frank William Yearbury was born near Hikurangi on 20 January 1895 to George and Emily Louisa Yearbury (nee Harnett) who married in 1885 (reg. 1885/2689).

He married Lilian (Lily) Mabel Allan on 25 July 1916 (reg. 1916/7798) and they lived in Helena Bay, Whangarei. Frank was farmer and then a corporal in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade during World War I (serial No. 53736). He embarked on 16 July 1917 on the Athenic for Liverpool, England.

Frank was killed in action in Somme, France, on 5 April 1918 (reg. 1918/26879). He was buried in Euston Road Cemetery in Colincamps, Somme, France. On 27 April 1918 the Northern Advocate reported: PERSONAL Rifleman Frank William Yearbury, who was killed in action in France on April 5, was the fourth son of Mr and Mrs George Yearbury, of Mairtown. He left New Zealand in the 26th contingent. A very few days before news of his death came to hand the parents received a letter from him stating that he had just reached the trenches and had seen some fighting. He must have been six weeks in action before the fatal injuries were received. Prior to enlistment he was farming in the Helena Bay district. His wife was a daughter of Mr Allen, of Piaka. Very general sympathy is felt throughout the district for the bereaved relatives. (p. 2).

Later that same year Lilian gave birth to their stillborn son.

The widowed Lilian’s second marriage was to William Gordon Mitchell (1898-1971) on 25 February 1920 (reg. 1920/2034). She went on to have eight children with William. Lilian died, aged 75, on 3 April 1971 (reg. 1971/27682). She was buried with William at Waikumete Cemetery in Auckland on 6 April 1971.
