About Rhoda Bolduan
-1900 census, Ancestry image 4
Lorenz Leppert age 38, born Germany
wife Alice Leppert
children Emil, Lizzie & Chester Leppert
children's birth years are listed as:
Emil 11/1886; Lizzie 1/1889; Chester 12/1899
(SO it looks 1 CHILD PER MARRIAGE)
(note that a daughter August Rosa Leppert is missing from this list of children....see info. further below)
(this 1900 census also lists 5 "Nicewander/Nicewonder children that apparently were Alice's children)
(eventually I found Lorenz living in Indianapolis, Ind. & divorced from wife Alice)
-then I find the obituary for Lena (Strehle) Leppert who died Friday 4/8/1892 in Champaign, Il. (typhoid pneumonia)
(note that Lena's maiden surname has been spelled different ways: Strehle, Straehle & Stralie)
This obit states she had THREE children but does not list their no names - obit states she married Lorenz Leppert abt. 4 1/2 yrs. prior; lived in Champaign all her life.
-Then I found "Guardian's Petition" paperwork referring to Lena R. Leppert's estate - it showed 3 children: Emil, Elizabeth & Augusta
This document dated 12/5/1892
Emil was 4 yrs. 11/10/1892
Elizabeth was 2 yrs. 1/1/1892
Augusta was 10 mos. old 11/9/1892/female
-paperwork earlier in the year showed the children's names as: Emil age 4, Lizzie age 2 & Rosa Leppert age 3 mos. dated 5/10/1892 (Rosa was Augusta listed above)
-NOTE THAT AUGUSTA ROSA LEPPERT WILL BECOME KNOWN AS RHODA (LANDON) BOLDUAN, adopted daughter of Elmus & Sarah/Sadie (McAuley) (Landon) (Benware) (Jauch)
-Then I wondered if Sarah/Sadie & husband Elmus Landon were living in Champaign, Il.
I found Elmus Landon, painter, listed in the Champaign, Il. City Directories 1893 & 1895-96 city directories.
-Then a gal at the Champaign Il., Genealogy Library got on the computer & found the paperwork where Elmus Landon & his wife Sadie Landon petition to adopt Augusta Rosa Leppert, age 1 year on the 10 day of January 1893.
(this paperwork has 2 dates 7/19/1893 & 8/5/1893)
The Landon's also petition that the childs name be changed to Augusta Rosa "Landon".
This record states that this child's mother is dead, but the father is living & consents to the adoption - petitioners state they will educate & support her -
later in the document it states "it is therefore ordered & adjudged by the court that the said Augusta Rosa Landon be the adopted child of said petitioners...& that the name of said child be changed to that of Augusta Rosa Landon"
signed by C.C. Staley, Judge
I don't know if they officially changed her name from Augusta Rosa to Rhoda or maybe it was just a nickname - I'm "not" going to pursue that avenue.
Rhoda's birthdate was shown as 1/10/1892 on her Soc. Sec. entry at rootsweb.com which agrees with the above document.
