OBITUARY. MR RHYS LLEWELYN THOMAS. The late Mr Thomas, of Whakamarama, whose death occurred this week, was born in South Wales in 1875 and early entered the timbermilling industry, where he qualified as an accountant. He married in 1902 and came to New Zealand in 1910 on appointment to manage a sawmill in Taupiri for an English firm. He later engaged in flaxmilling and came to Tauranga in 1919 and took over the management of the Tauranga Rimu Co.’s mill at Ta'uriko. Later Mr Thomas entered business as an accountant in Tauranga, and was associated for many years with various companies in the district, the East Coast Shipping Co. and the Tauranga Electric Power Board. He was a much respected citizen and member of the Masonic Lodge. He later moved to Whakamarama, where he resided till his death. The late Mr Thomas is survived by his wife and three children: Mr Harry Thomas (Paeroa) and Mr Walter Thomas (Whangarei), both of whom are in the army,' and Miss Dorothy Thomas (Rotorua). The funeral took place on Wednesday, when the service was conducted by the Rev. O. S. O. Gibson, and by brethren of the Masonic Order. Source: Bay of Plenty Times (23 May 1942, p. 2).
