About Richard Henry Ashton

Richard was a 20 year old wood turner when he married Mary Ann in 1860. He departed with Mary from Lancashire on the "British Crown" in 1863 into the New Zealand port of Lyttleton. There was no work for those involved in the cotton mill industry in Manchester due to a world surplus of cotton which may have influenced the move to NZ.

He moved his family to Heathcote the following year where he joined the workforce in constructing the Moorhouse Tunnel. This rail tunnel was constructed between 1861 and 1867 between Lyttleton and Heathcote. Once completed, this replaced the shipping of goods from Lyttleton along the Heathcote River. While working as a miner in the tunnel construction, Richard joined the Canterbury Rifle Volunteers (1864 to 1867).

In December 1867, Richard became a railwayman and about five years later the family moved to Waltham where Henrietta was born. By 1875, the family were living in the new Borough of Sydenham. The value of his property around this time is recorded as 220 pounds. He took out a mortgage on this property at one point for 100 pounds at 12.5% interest which he repaid within three years.

He was a railway man right to the last; he died in harness. The following news item appeared in the Christchurch Press of Thursday, 29 May 1902:

Sudden death

Richard Henry Ashton, sixty one years of age, who had been an engine driver for the past thirty years and who resided at Shakespeare Road, Sydenham, died suddenly at 6:30 yesterday morning at the railway engine sheds. He was seen by John Hawkins, one quarter of an hour before, and he claimed of being ill. Hawkins assisted him to the engine sheds, where he expired before aid, which had been telephoned for, could arrive. The deceased had been attended by Dr Richard Anderson for heart disease and bronchitis. An inquest was held at the morgue yesterday and in accordance with Dr Anderson's evidence, a verdict was returned that death was due to heart disease.

He is buried at the Linwood Cemetery in Christchurch at block 33, plot number 306.
