Biography

The earliest Combs in Queens County is Richard COMBS I, probably b bef 1648, EN; d 1685-1698, probably in Hempstead, Queens Co, NY; m by 1672, probably in Hempstead, Queens Co, NY, Elizabeth, b by 1658, d. 11 Mar-May 1706 (??), Hempstead, Queens, Co, NY(??). Richard died 1685/1698, Hempstead, Nassau Co., NY.

Richard COMES I was first recorded in Hempstead in 1669, and was possibly the same who was recorded in Jamaica (also Queens Co) in 1676 (He may have also owned land in Jamaica, and certainly some of his descendants were in that town). Francis COMES was recorded in Newtown, listed above as Queens, but today listed under Suffolk Co, NY.

Thanks to the late Researcher George D.A. Combes, the number of records already collected for Hempstead and Jamaica are sufficient for each township to have it's own report. The following records consist of County Records with the township unknown or not stated. All identifiable Town Records for Hempstead and Jamaica can be found in their reports. A primary source for the records of Hempstead and Jamaica are extractions from a partial 1961-dated, rough draft of an unpublished 1925 Manuscript provided by Combs Researcher Hannah Friedlander and titled "Combes Genealogy" by George Davison Aylesworth Combes (1889-1941), Assisted by Clinton de Raisnes Combs (1886-1953), compiled ante 1925, Edited by Winifred Lovering Holman, S.B., F.A.S.G.; hereinafter GDAC, 1925.

Richard owned 26 acres of land in Hempstead October 6, 1685. Most of the people in Hempstead at that time arrived in 1644 with the Reverend Richard Denton who arrived in New England in 1630. [1] Richard appeared in court at Hempstead July 3, 1669. He appeared on the 1683 tax list of Hempstead. [2]

Research notes

I used Roots search feature for familysearch.org using birth range 1640-1660 and death range 1680-1700. No records found Aug. 5, 2016

Richard does not appear on the 1698 Census of Hempstead, however his children Elizabeth, John, Robert, and Mercey do appear. Richard may have passed away prior to 1698.

Disputed origins

  • no evidence to support as son of Archdale Combs & Mary Underwood
  • Not the son of Francis Combs Francis Coombs of the Mayflower lineage.
  • His parents are unknown
  • He had previously been shown as a son of Francis Coombs, but lacking reliable sources. He is not listed in the Mayflower Families through Five Generations for Degory Priest published in 2008. If more recent scholarly proof can be provided, his parents can be revisited.Madison-125 20:31, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
  • Possible grandparents John Coombs and Sarah Priest may have had more than two children. There is an eleven year gap with no known children before Sarah returned to England in 1646.
  • Possible parent John Combs (b abt 1633) may have had children before his marriage to Elizabeth Barlow (He married at age 29).
  • Possible parent Francis Combs (b abt 1635) may have had a previous marriage/children before his 1673 marriage to widow Deborah Morton (he married at age 39).
  • It may require a known Richard Combs direct descendent, who is willing to take a Y DNA test. This may lead to a Y DNA match with another Combs, and find the father of Richard.
