About Richard Foxwell, of Barnstable

Parents unknown. Not son of Richard Foxwell and Susan Bonython.

He seems to have come from Kent. There is some evidence that he lived in London before coming to America. He probably came in the Winthrop fleet. He lived first at Salem or Boston. He petitioned to become a Freeman on 19 October 1630, and was sworn as a Freeman on 18 May 1631. In 1634 he was in Scituate, having married Ann Shelley, a servant who came from England that year. On 8 January 1635 he was one of the founders, with Rev. John Lothrop, of the first church at Scituate. His children's births are recorded at Barnstable 1635 to 1641, and he removed to Barnstable before the birth of the last. At his death he must have been very poor, as his sons-in-law refused to act as executors of his estate.

Savage cites Deane that Richard Foxwell came from Kent and died in 1668, noting however that Deane confuses this Richard Foxwell with another of the same name who lived in Piscataqua. This other Richard Foxwell was born in 1604 in England. He came to New England in 1630 and lived in that part of Maine then known as Georgiance. He returned to England in 1632, then came back to America in 1633. In 1636, he was living at Scarborough, Maine when he married Sarah Bonython. He died in 1677.

Richard Foxwell came from England with Governor Winthrop in 1631. Later that year he moved to Scituate and was admitted as freeman. He later moved to Barnstable and became a member of the Barnstable Militia in 1643. He died in Barnstable, MA. Probably an indentured servant to pay off relocation to Massachusetts. -Oath of Freemanship/Allegiance; 18 May 1631; Plymouth Colony, MA
