Richard Jackman, son of James Jackman, Jr. and Joanna (James) Jackman, was born in Newbury, Massachusetts in June 1659.[1][2][3] Records show his specific date of birth variously as June 5,[2] June 6[3] or June 15.[1][4]
Richard took the Oath of Allegiance in Newbury in 1678 at the age of 19.[5]
Richard married Elizabeth Plumer in Newbury, Massachusetts on June 26, 1682.[6]
Richard and Elizabeth had the following children, all born in Newbury:
Joannah, b. April 30, 1683,[7] m. May 27, 1708 John Short in Newbury[8] Richard, b. August 17, 1684,[1] m. int. April 6, 1703 Elizabeth Major in Newbury[6] James, b. September 5, 1686,[7] m. December 8, 1721 Mary French in Salisbury[8] Elizabeth, b. May 12, 1689,[9] m. May 15, 1706 Joseph Willit in Newbury[8] (probably) Samuel, b. perhaps about 1691, m. May 23, 1711 Miriam Plumer in Newbury, d. perhaps about 1721 Joseph, b. April 17, 1698,[10] m. August 3, 1720 Hannah Plumer in Newbury[8] The house that Richard built in in 1696 has been restored and is maintained by the Sons & Daughters of the First Settlers of Newbury, Massachusetts.[11]
Upon the death of Richard's father-in-law, Samuel Plumer, in 1702, Richard took over the job of operating the ferry over the River Parker. Richard continued to operate the ferry until at least March 1712. By 1714, however, the ferry was leased to William Dole.[12]
Richard died sometime after March 1712 and probably died in Newbury. Many family trees state that he died on December 30, 1713. However, no record has been found that supports that date of death.
