Mentioned in “Kent Island“ section from History of Newbury, Massachusetts 1635-1902 by John James Currier A History of Newbury, Massachusetts 1635-1902.
"Richard Kent sr malster and [his son or cousin] Richard2 Kent jr came to New England in the ship Mary and John Robert Say res master They arrived in Boston in May 1634 and went with Rev Thomas Parker and others to Ipswich where they remained until the spring of 1635 when they removed to Newbury Stephen brother and James possibly brother of Richard Kent sr came to Newbury about the same time."

"In Essex County and most of Mass. in 1600s it was not unusual to have a Jr. who WAS NOT the son of the other of the same name. Jr., III, etc. were many times used to distinguish between two men with the same name and reflected their relative age NOTa relationship. They could be cousins or totally unrelated. To complicate matters there were apparently two Richards: Richard and Richard Jr. The one referred to as Richard Sr. died June 14, 1654 Newbury VR (Deaths) to 1849, Essex Institute Salem, 1911. The one referred to as Richard (the Sr. was already dead) died Nov 25, 1689 Newbury VR (Deaths) to 1849, Essex Institute Salem, 1911. Savage (Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England) seems to indicate that when Richard arrived on the Mary and John in 1634 he arrived with another of the same name, possibly a cousin."
