Richard Henry Matthews J.P. born 1835 who like his father had a great thirst for knowledge was in 1864 appointed Superintendent of Native schools. Once married to Clara Dunn he built their home "Summerville" overlooking Kaitaia. In this time of no telephones until 1875 when Kaitaia was connected by telegraph, the first Post Office was a verandah room in the house. He was a leader in the community, appointed to numerous boards holding a number of public offices, in Church work he studied Greek hoping to eventually be ordained as Rev Joseph, however he was active as a Layreader, Vestryman and a Synodsman. The Masons made him a Worshipful Master and as a J.P. he attended court and performed many duties including marrying. What an interesting man, of such competence and diverse interests. He was passionately fond of hunting, boating and fishing. Cricket his favorite game often revolved around many 'Matthews' versus the "Others" matches.
