From Pedigree of Stapleton of Carleton
The Stapletons were originally from Richmondshire and can be traced back to Nicholas de Stapleton, a judge on the King's Bench who died in 1290. The next generation settled in Yorkshire and several branches of the family developed at Carlton and Bedale, and then Wighill and Myton
Brian Stapleton, died 2 April, 1550, buried at Burton Joyce. His first wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Lord Scrope of Bolton, by whom he had his son Richard. He married secondly Joan, daughter of Thomas Bassett, by whom he had Brian, Richard and Elizabeth.
