Obituary: Born in Lancaster, PA May 25, 1915, Robert C. Barto, 58, 3312 Moonlight, passed away September 21, 1973. Chairman El Paso Chapter Sierra Club, member Citizens Advisory Impact Study Committee, Wilderness Society, G.A.S.P., Rio Grande Sailing Club, and Sierra Blanca Ski Patrol. Active member and past officer Unitarian Community of El Paso. Owner of El Paso Sailboat, Inc. Member Civilian Conservation Corps from 1935-1937. Marine radio operator for American President Lines, Mason Navigation Co., U.S. Army Transport Service and U.S. Maritime Commission. He was a radio operator for Pan-American Airways, Wake Island through Dec. of 1941, U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-44, P.O.W. in Germany for 18 months, worked for F.A.A. from 1945-53 in Reno, Nevada. Graduated from University of Nevada in 1954. Electronics Engineer for F.A.A. in Indianapolis, Indiana 1953-56. Founder, past Vice-president and past member of the Board, International Foundation For Telemetering, had retired June 1973, and Chief of Range, Engineering Division at White Sands Missle Range after a total of 31 years of civil service. Survivors include his wife, Helen Barto; 3 children, Rodney, Alan and Mary Barto; 2 grandchildren, Aaron and Jessica Barto; 2 brothers, Harold and Charles Barto; 3 sisters, Elva Kennedy, Ethel Parker and Stella Parks. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, September 25, 7:30 p.m. Unitarian Community, 4425 Byron St. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Sierra Club Foundation, 1050 Mills Towers, San Francisco, California; the Unitarian Community of El Paso Memorial Fund or to the American Heart Association. Services will be held under the direction of Salazar Mortuary.
