About Robert Thomas Cochran

Robert was a member of the Parliament in Mecklenburg Co., NC, and in 1827 was appointed to survey, lay out, and name counties in Alabama. Robert went there and homesteaded 50 acres, bought 1000 acres in Alabama, and named it Hacklesburg, Marion Co. (AL). He moved his family there and continued his surveying of the lands and naming of the counties of Alabama. In "North West Alabama, Vol. 1, pg. 218, author: Clark," information indicates that Robert Cochran was the first white man to settle in northwest AL.
Robert & Sarah (Hegemen) Cochran had 11 children, 2 of whom died in infancy. The others are: Levi T. b. October 3, 1799 in Mecklenburg Co., NC, married Elizabeth Bevens in 1822, settled in Giles, Maury Co., TN; Robert b. 1802 Mecklenburg Co., NC; Silas Maxwell b. January 1, 1809 in Mecklenburg Co., NC, moved to Giles, Maury Co., TN in 1829, moved to Belden, Pontotoc Co., MS in 1836; Andrew K. b. 1811 in Mecklenburg Co., TN, buried near Hacklesburg, AL in Vandina Cemetery; Thomas D. b. 1816 in Mecklenburg Co., NC, eventually settled in Poplar Springs, MS near his brother Silas, migrated to TX in 1866 and is buried in Salem, TX; Mildred married Ray Duncan; Jane; Mary "Polly"; and Margaret who married FNU Green.
