Sailed his entire career on the Interlake Steamship Line. Only completed school through 8th grade before going to sea. Was chief engineer on the line’s boats for years. When Interlake got their first 2 turbine engines, they sent him and a colleague to New York to study up on them. Twice a year he was able to bring family on a voyage as a “vacation”. His wife went but usually only took one of the girls at a time so they didn’t fight!
