It is said that the family, long and eminent residents in the towns of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, encouraged and financed the seafaring enterprises of William Barnard Rhodes.

Robert must have retired in 1791 as the following notice appeared in the London Gazette issue 13331, page 451, Epworth, July 28, 1791
Notice is hereby given, that the Partnership between Peter Barnard and Robert Heaton, of Epworth, in the County of Lincoln, Mercers, Linen and Woolen drapers and Grocers, was, by mutual Consent, dissolved on the ill Day of July instant, and the Business will for the future be carried on by the said Robert Heaton on his own Account: All Debts due to the said Partnership are to be paid to the said Peter Barnard, who is authorized to receive the fame.
