About Robert Barkley Higginbotham

Robert Higginbotham was born in Albemarle County, Virginia, in 1754. He was the son of Moses Higginbotham and Frances Kyle.

At an early age, he went to Tazewell County, Virginia, and settled on a large plantation at Liberty Hill.

When the Revolutionary War began, Robert joined the Washington County Colonel's Army. He was in Capt. James Dysart's Light Horse Company under command of Colonel William Campbell. With these men, he fought in the decisive battle of King's Mountain.

In 1813 he took his wife, Nancy, and eleven children, and went to Huntsville, Alabama. He died in Huntsville in October of 1825.

This information can be found in "The Past is Presented for the Future" by Edna Baynes, page 199, where it was copied verbatum. One sources was shown as "From the Will of John Higginbotham in the Probate Registry, Cheshire, England."

Robert and Nancy lived near McAdams Creek. Washington County, Virginia for more than 30 years. All of their children were born there. (Washington County later became Tazewell County.)

He received certificate #1010 dated December 11, 1813 for 160 acres in about the same area as his son Charles. This area was part of the Mississippi Territory, which later became Madison County, Alabama. This land was located about two miles southwest of present day Hazel Green. The certificate was not registered until October 5, 1819.
