About Robert Alexander Lott

Birth: Oct. 10, 1797 Georgia, USA Death: Jan. 13, 1860 Washington County Texas, USA

Robert Alexander Lott was born October 10, 1797 to John Arthur Lott and Sarah Ann "Sallie" Jones in Georgia (John Arthur Lott and Sallie had at least 12 children).

He married Susan Catherine Behn on 17 Jan 1828 (some records stated 17 Jan 1823) in Tallahasse, Leon County, Florida (pka Florida Territory).

They had 11 children. They had at least two chidren born in Florida and the rest in Texas. They came to Texas ca 1830-1835 crossing the Brazos River and then settling the town of Old Washington (Washington County) on December 25 of 1836. He came from Mississippi, but was a native of Florida where some records state he was born near the city of Tallahasse, October 10, 1797 (but census records and Tx Death state he was born in Georgia, so there is a conflict in some of the history writings and that of the official records we have on file in our family records). Two of his brothers (John A. Lott and Jesse Lott) came a bit later and joined him in Texas and at least one brother, Michael, who also came even later to join him.

Robert Alexander Lott located in Washington County, about four miles southwest of Washington, and in 1854 returned to the old town of Washington, where he was a hotel proprietor and did a general merchandising business until the breaking out of the late Civil War, when he closed out his business. He took part in the Somervell expedition and was one of the Texians captured at Mier. He drew a white bean at the hacienda of Salado and thereby escaped death at that place. Those who drew black beans were shot, pursuant to orders received from Santa Ana. he died January 3, 1860 (some records indicate 1861) at the age of sixty-three. He grew up in Florida in the stock-raising business and he brought a band of his fine horses with him to Texas. He married Susan Catherine Behn on January 17, 1828 in Tallahasse who died February 28, 1895 at 84 years of age. They had at least 11 children and at least the following five were still living when she passed away in 1895: William Robert Lott (1840-1926) who married Mary "Mollie" Louisa Gresham, Jesse Bertandt/Bertam Lott who married Augusta Ladchert Lockett, James T. Lott (1845-1934) who married Mary A. Ford, Laura L. Lott-McKinney (who was married to John C. McKinney when her mother died in 1895), and Phradius Kavanaugh 'Bud' Lott (1854-1930) who married Mattie Alabama Smith.

His brother, John Lott (who is my 3rd great grandfather), (1st wife name who died sometime between 1828-1840 likely in Mississippi to an Elizabeth Lee on 07 Feb, 1818 in Marion County, MS - some say he married a Sarah maiden name unknown, but I have found no record to prove this)had at least 4 children: Sarah Ann Lott-Cooke-Fountain born in Mississippi (1821-1872); Jesse Lott born in Mississippi(1823- 14 Feb 1874); John Lott born in Mississippi (abt 1825-????); and Louisa A Lott-Miller-Cohron-Aikman (this is my 2nd great grandmother from her 1st marriage to Robert T. Miller) was born in Tallahassee, Florida (1828-1911). So, John migrated from Marion County, Mississippi area to Florida between 1825-1828 and then later to Texas to join his brother Robert Alexander Lott. After John's first wife died, he married widow Celia Neal-Miller (whose husband Andrew Miller passed away in 1838) on March 4, 1840 in Washington-on-the-Brazos. Some history writing state that John Lott died in 1838 (killed by Indians near Killum Springs, Grimes County, Texas and an 1838 could have been his father also John A Lott or they confused the death date with Celia's 1st husband Andrew Miller who died in 1838 ) - the cause of death is correct, but the year 1838 is incorrect because he was still alive until at least ca 1852 after he re-married to Celia Neal-Miller in 1840. There are land transactions and his marriage record to prove he did not die in 1838 (perhaps the historical writings inadvertantly used the date of Celia's first husband's death of 1838 or transcribed the date incorrectly from other records). He was killed in Killum Springs, Grimes County, Texas by Indians supposedly on a trip from Limestone county to Killum Springs regarding possible purchase of some land (according to our family records) ca 1852. John A Lott had a horse and boarding business in old town Washington where in 1836 he boarded David Crockett and 4 other army volunteers and their horses (See memorial photo pictures for copy of the bill David Crockett sent to the government to repay John Lott: it reads:

To Washington, 23 January 1836 This is to certify that John Lott furnished myself and four other volunteers on our way to the army with accommodations for our selves & horses. The government will pay him $7. - 50 cts. David Crockett (written and signed by David Crockett - see scanned photo of it on this memorial).

His brother, Jesse Lott, located in the San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas area where he died October 18, 1869 in either Liberty County, Texas or the San Antonio area.

His son, Jesse Bertandt/Bertram Lott was a well-known merchant of Navasota. He was born in Washington County, near the old town of Washington on his father's farm on April 1, 1842 where he grew to manhood. He learned merchandising in his father's store at Old Washington and there followed same until 1889 when he engaged in business for himself and eventually owned a large merchandising establishment himself. He married Augusta Ladchert Lockett(daughter of Col. Henry Edmund Lockett (a Texas pioneer of 1856) and his wife Katherine "Kate" Johnson-Lockett. Jesse and Augusta had at least 3 children (two daughters: Jessie L. Lott who married Marshall Peterson; and Kate Alice Lott who married Haynes Shannon) and one son: Edward Thomas Lott who married Cornelia (MNU).

Robert Alexander Lott died on January 13, 1860 of typhoid and was buried in Washington Cemetery (see photos in this memorial showing headstone, family plot sketch done by Pam Puryear in 1997, and excerpt from the 1970 Washington Cemetery inventory showing LOTT burials)
