Bob Lukes ran Dean's -- Oskaloosa's oldest cigar store -- with his partner Frank Beach. In 1949, it was sold to Oren James.

Married twice; first to Cuba Frances Griggs on 31 March 1911 in Mahaska County, Iowa, and second on 8 Sept 1920 to Margie Peters in Mahaska Country, Iowa.

Robert's father, Luke Lukes, came to America first. His mother immigrated a few years later to the USA May 1, 1885 aboard the Inman Line's "City of Rome" from Liverpool to New York. She met up with Luke and within a year Robert was born in Iowa.

In 1910, he is listed as living with his sister Rose Lukes Kessler and her family in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Saturday, June 28, 1952 -- Robert L Lukes, 66, of 302 High Avenue East, died in his home early this morning. He was formerly a molder at the Iowa Valve and later owned Dean's Cigar Store in partnership with Frank Beach and then Raymond Allison. He retired about five years ago and had been confined to his home by illness most of that time. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, and three sisters: Mrs. Rose Kessler, Mrs. Alice Fitzgerald, and Mrs. Kate Yaffee, all of Oskaloosa. Funeral services will be held in the Newman funeral home Monday, June 30 at 1:30pm with the Rev M. Dwight Walker in charge. Burial will be a Forest Cemetery.
