"He grew up in New Mexico, the son of a Canadian immigrant who worked in aerosol research. .... t Mercer’s mother enjoyed theater and the arts, and Mercer has said his father piqued his interest in computers—in high school, he wrote code and studied manuals. While enrolled at the University of New Mexico, he worked as a programmer at the nearby Air Force base. ... “I really loved everything about computers,” he said in Baltimore. “I loved the solitude of the computer lab late at night, I loved the air-conditioned smell of the place, I loved the sounds of the discs whirring and the printers clacking.” He later got his Ph.D. and went to work for IBM in 1972. He and his colleagues there devised a way for a computer to use statistical formulas and algorithms to translate languages. The Association for Computational Linguistics has called their work “revolutionary.” His parents both died in 1993.
