“Before the close of the Revolution four brothers, named Robert, James William, and Peter Patterson, moved from Dauphin County to Fayette County, where they proposed to found new homes. [William and Peter came from Paxtang, Lancaster Co., which later became part of Dauphin County. The other two brothers came from Drumore, Lancaster County.] Robert settled in Westmoreland County and the others in Fayette, Peter and William in Jefferson [created from Washington] township, and James in Franklin. The brothers came westward in company, and with their families traveled and carried their effects on the backs of horses. [All four brothers did not travel together. James came first; then I appears that Peter and William, traveling together, arrived; then over ten years later brother Robert came with his family..]"
