About Robert Proctor
Additional Curator's Notes:
DO NOT CONFUSE Robert Proctor of Virginia with Robert Proctor, Jr. of Massachusetts. They have different parents, different wives, different children. Attention to these details will prevent many errors.
Robert Proctor was the son of Ancient Planter John Graye Proctor and his wife Allis Graye. John sailed to Virginia aboard the Sea Venture, was wrecked off Bermuda, and eventually made his way to Virginia aboard the Discovery. Allis arrived in Virginia aboard the George in 1621. It is unclear to me whether John and Allis were married in London before he left or in Virginia. It is also unclear if Robert was born in London and came with his mother to Virginia, or if he was born in Jamestown, Virginia. The sources are not primary and all conflict with each other. In addition, there is confusion about where Robert died. Some sources say he died in Virginia while others say he died in Massachusetts. Is he being confused with the Robert Proctor, Jr referenced in the first paragraph? I can't say. There are no hard facts to say that he died in Virginia, just as there are no hard facts to say he died in Massachusetts. One source puts his death in Maryland based on the burial of his wife Rachel. Again, it's a secondary source with no evidence to prove it. Maria Edmonds-Zediker, Volunteer Curator, 8/18/2011
