About Robert Carson Quiggle
Robert Carson Quiggle was one of six children born to George Washington Quiggle and Phoebe Moyer. The family lived in Kinzua, Pennsylvania when their children were born. The village of Kinzua was demolished in the 1960's to make way for the Kinzua Dam.
Robert's mother Phoebe died of tuberculosis in her late 20's. Robert's father, George, left his children to fend for themselves. Robert and his brother George worked together to support the younger siblings. Robert's sister Rowena was very young and was raised by the neighboring Rock Morrison family.
Robert fought in Cuba during the Spanish American War. He was a Corporal and later acting Sergeant with the First U.S. Volunteer Engineers. He was wounded in battle and carried a bullet in his leg for the rest of his life. He was erroneously reported killed in action to his family and his first wife remarried and moved with Robert's first son, Albert, to California. Robert's children remember having to track down his first wife Elizabeth and his son in California after Robert died in order to secure his pension for his second wife Alma.
Robert believed he was of German descent and often told a story of three brothers who came together to the US from Germany. He believed he was a direct descendent of one of these three brothers.
