About Robert Semple
Johnnie Galbraith's notes have this person (Robert Semple's father) down as a "John Semple" who "carried the flag at the battle of Bothwell Brig (1679). The flag is still preserved at Strathaven". However, the gap in years is too big for this to be the case.
Notes from web suggest that John was in fact the *grandfather* of Robert (b.1720): Information from a book available on the net by Elizabeth Schnegelberger on Lanarkshire families led me to another Robert Semple as father of Robert (b.1720) given as tailor from Bridgend, Sandford.. DOB not given but said to be son of John Semple who in turn is said to have carried a Standard at Bothwell Brig preseved in Strathaven museum...I have seen the standard there. She quotes a Semple family from Thankerton as the source of the info. The same story is repeated on a handwritten family tree from the last century perhaps written by my Great great grandfather? He came from Kypeside & became a minister at Ruthrieston West Church Aberdeen dying in 1922. His portait is in our dining room.
