In 1784, Robert and Nancy (nee Stockton) Shields moved from Virginia to what is now Sevier County, Tennessee. At that time it was part of North Carolina.
In 1792, Robert married Sabra White in Sevier County, Tennessee. She was born in Bertie, Bertie County, North Carolina. Sabra's sister, Penelope, married James Shields, a brother of Robert.
In 1808, Robert moved to Floyd County, Indiana. He was a private in the Indiana Militia in the War of 1812. After the war he returned to Sevier County, Tennessee, and became quite wealthy.
Robert's brother, John Shields, was a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806). John was a hunter and gunsmith and after his return from the Pacific hunted with Daniel Boone.
In 1835, Robert Shields died and is buried at Middle Creek Cemetery in Sevierville, Sevier County, Tennessee.
