About Robert Wolcott Smith

Robert W. Smith, passed away peacefully at his Sun City home on Sunday, April 19, 2015 with his beloved Ginny at his side. He was 87 years old. He entered this life in Dubuque, Iowa on June 20, 1927, the first born to Dr. Owen P. Smith and Norma Wolcott Smith. His childhood was spent in Peoria, Illinois where he went to Peoria High School. At age 17, he and a group of his classmates volunteered for WWII service in the US Navy. They were called to active duty before graduation, so the parents marched across the stage and received their diplomas for them. He served as a Medical Corpsman during the war. Afterwards, he attended the University of Illinois where he was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He received a BS degree in Business in January 1950.

After only six months on his first job in Chicago, he was recalled for service in the Korean War. The following year a new Officer Candidate School was started by the Navy in Newport, Rhode Island and Bob was selected from the fleet for the first class. He graduated and was commissioned in November 1951. Later the following year while serving aboard the destroyer USS Cogswell DD-651, he received word that he had completed the required active duty time for the call-up, and was released from active duty so he could then restart his civilian career. He continued service in the Reserve with various assignments to retirement in San Jose in 1971 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

For 40 years Bob worked in Accounting, Finance, Auditing, and Computer Systems. He was with Shell Oil Co. for 12 years in Chicago, New York City (Head Office) and San Francisco. Afterwards, he was Vice President and Controller for a Mutual Fund in San Francisco, President of Systems and Software Design Corp in Palo Alto, California, a company he founded, Vice President and Controller for the leasing division of the Crocker Bank, and Controller for SRMC, a computer company in San Jose, California.

Bob volunteered as a Coach and Treasurer for Little League, a Tax Preparer for seniors in the AARP program, and an elementary school mentor. Favorite activities included gardening, traveling, league bowling, doing daily crosswords, and Sudoku. He particularly enjoyed going to reunions for his schools, fraternity, Navy ships, and the Wolcott family. He was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church and MOWW (Military Order of the World Wars) as well as a number of clubs in Sun City.

He was married three times. First to Mary Jane Cramer of Chicago for 51 years and with whom he raised four children, mostly in California. After she passed away, he married Jeanne Brilliott of Madison, Wisconsin. They decided to retire and moved to Sun City in 2004. They had eight good years together before she died in 2010. Unexpectedly, he met Virginia Brantley Hillendahl, also a Sun City resident, originally of Abilene, Texas and recently widowed. They fell in love soon after and were married in 2011. She also had four children in her first marriage, so between them they have 22 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Besides his beloved Ginny, survivors include his daughter, Mary K. Gawley and husband Charlie with three children of Fairfield, California; his daughter, Barbara Fortanely and six children of Pflugerville, Texas; his son, Roger and wife Juli-Ann and three children of Riverton, Utah; his daughter, Carol Cook and husband William with two children of Pflugerville, Texas. Also surviving is his brother, Edward P. Smith and his wife, Jan in Morton, Illinois as well as two sisters, Margaret Ross of Sarasota, Florida, and Mary Jo Stewart and her husband, Phillip of Peoria, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Thomas and his sister, Martha.
