About Robert William Stewart

The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, September 20, 1906

'Miss Rhoda Hancock Resigns Her Charge and Becomes a Bride. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The following is clipped from the Evening Star, of Independence, Kansas, and the lady actor in the case is a daughter of JOHN H. HANCOCK, formerly of this county, and a niece of AMASA GILBERT and H.C. HANCOCK. She was born near Russell:

"All Independence will be interested in the following romance in which the sister of DR. IVY HANCOCK of this city figures as one of the principals. The story is told by the Denver Post:

Estes Park is all aglow over the sensational elopement which occurred Monday morning. While Denver heiresses and Eastern society buds hovered around the handsome R.G. SWADEY from Chicago, who has been spending a few days at the Dunraven Hotel at Estes Park, a nurse girl captivated the aristocratic guest and now, instead of a salaried servant receiving $30 a month, is the mistress of millions.

MR. SWADEY is a wealthy man from the western metropolis; he is connected with one of Chicago's leading banking institutions; is president of a large investment company, and makes a specialty of buying up banks that have failed. With this end in view he came to Denver to make arrangements for the purchase of the assets of the Western Bank, which went under about a year ago.

RHODA HANCOCK was the nurse girl, who toted around the little 2-year-old child of MRS. MILLER B. PORTER of Denver, a summer resident of Estes. She sat at the nurses' table and was noticed by the guests. At 7 o'clock every evening she put the child to bed and stayed with him until morning.

Returning from a two days' horseback trip into the mountains last week, MRS. PORTER discovered that her nurse maid was out driving with the rich Chicagoan. Meanwhile the baby had been thrust upon its grandmother, MRS. W W. PORTER, to watch. MRS. PORTER was not only surprised but also indignant.

Monday morning the nurse girl told her she was going to Denver for a couple of days and that when she returned it would be as a guest, just as her present mistress and MRS. GENEVIEVE CHANDLER PHIPPS were.

Excited by the startling news, all the guests turned out to see her take the coach. Imagine the consternation of scheming mothers when they saw MR. SWADEY climb in after her.

As soon as the two arrived in Denver they went directly to the Albany, where they were united in matrimony on Wednesday evening.

MISS HANCOCK came originally from Kansas; her parents were poor and she was obliged to work for a living. She arrived in Denver a year ago and has been employed as governess in good families. MR. SWADEY was a widower with a small boy, 7 years old, who has been traveling with his father all summer." -------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert November 2, 2004 iggy29@rnetinc.net http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialucas/Main.htm http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?Hancock,County::il::32840.html
