About Robert Tatham of Biggecrofte, Yorkshire
but... there is another contemporary Robert Tatham marriage:
- Ro: Tathame to Margaret Cragge Feb. 11, 1616 Thornton-in-Lonsdale
We see a baptism cited from Thornton-on-Londale parish records = Yorkshire, England, Church of England Parish Records, 1538-1873 for Robert Tathame Thornton-in-Lonsdale, 1576-1812 (accessed (2-19-2020)
√ We have to be careful... There are two contemporary Robert Tathams living near each other who may be closely related
What helps is that "Byggecroft" is in Thornton-in-Lonsdale..
Masongill is in Thornton-in-Lonsdale
"In the book called The History of the Township of Ireby by Colonel W H Chippendall (1935) there is mention of Robert Tatham (Yeoman) of Biggcroft being married to Margaret Cragg. It suggests this is his second marriage and is the one that took place in 1615-16. It also says that Biggcroft was in Masongill (Maysingill) which is a small hamlet with several buildings. "
The book identifies some of Robert's children.
From first marriage:
Thomas Tatham (buried at Thornton 1633-34)
Robert Tatham (buried at Thornton 1638) married Mary Bainbridge at Thornton
From second marriage:
William Tatham (bap. 1624, buried at Thornton 1703-4) married Frances Bannister of Masongill Hall)
~• work is underway in an attempt to sort out the various Tatham(e) relationships of Camforth, N. Yorkshire {Feb. thru Mar. 2020 MMvB, volunteer curator} now updated Feb. 2022 MMvB
- Robert Tatham, Blacksmith of Ingleton (It looks to be that he is the one whose will of 1661 is found) < this man, of similar age, is not this profile
- (this profile): Robert Tatham of Biggecrofte (near Ingleton?) (father of Elizabeth and Marmaduke & Elizabeth)
see side by side at: Yorkshire, England, Church of England Parish Records, 1538-1873 for Wm Tatham Thornton-in-Lonsdale, 1576-1812 > church records.
This citation is where we see what I think is evidence of two births to two separate Robert Tathams:
- June 9th 1624 baptism of William Tatham to Robert (this man is, I think, the blacksmith whose will we have at:Robert Tatham, Blacksmith of Ingleton
- July 31 1625 baptism of Thomas Tatham to Robert of Bige.. ("Bige." = Biggecrrofte, (we note from elsewhere)).This man doesn't have a will in the compendium of Ingleton wills
What does Biggecrofte mean?
The term Bigge is an interesting one. > Bige or Bigge means barley. So Biggecrofte would be a barley field or any place or specific place where barley was kept.
but, these two children may be brothers....
You'll remember me when the west wind moves upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky as we walk in fields of gold So she took her love for to gaze awhile upon the fields of barley In his arms she fell as her hair came down among the fields of gold = Sting (1993)
Will of the another Robert (not this one
