Robert Gordon Teather was a 28-year veteran of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P.) who was awarded the Cross of Valour, Canada's highest award for bravery, for a rescue he performed on 26 September 1981. He rescued two fishermen trapped in the overturned hull of an overturned boat. The two fishermen and their dog were in an air pocket fouled by diesel fumes. Teather rescued the men one at a time and wanted to rescue the dog, but was told it was too dangerous. He was relieved to discover that the next day when the boat was towed to shore the dog somehhow managed to stay alive.
Teather was presented with the Cross of Valour on 24 June 1983.
