Civil War Confederate Official. He served during the Civil War as the Confederate Register of the Treasury.

The son of 10th United States President John Tyler, he worked as his father's private secretary during his administration. In 1839, he published the book, "Poems Comprising The Last Man; The Elements of the Beautiful and Death." As the Civil War began, he pledged his loyalty to the Confederacy.

When Montgomery became the capitol, his daughter, Letitia, reportedly raised the first Confederate Flag on the Capitol Building. As the Register of the Confederate Treasury, his signature appeared on many Confederate dollar bills. After the War, he moved to Alabama and worked as the editor of the "Montgomery Advertiser" newspaper.
