About Robert de Bellomonte

Sir Robert de Beaumont of Crossland

b. C 1285 Drayton Hall, Shropshire, England; died 1341 Crossland Hall, Yorkshire, England (murdered by Sir John Eland, High Sheriff of Yorkshire)

occ: Coroner for the county of York until 1324, Commissioner of Array from 1323

In 1303 Sir Robert was granted lands in Crossland by his father

Sir Robert became involved in a feud with Sir John Eland, High Sheriff of Yorkshire when a neighbour named Exley killed Eland's nephew and then got protection at Crossland Hall.

The quarrel extended with Lockwood of Lockwood Hall and Sir Hugh Quarmby becoming involved. Both these men were killed by Eland one night and he then marched to Crossland where he found the drawbridge up. Early in the morning a servant opened the bridge, letting Eland and his armed men into Crossland. Sir Robert was dragged from his bed, and beheaded with a sword in his own hall. His sons were then invited to have breakfast with Eland.

Fifteen years later Sir Robert's son Adam joined with the sons of Lockwood of Lockwood, Sir Hugh Quarmby and Thomas de Laci in a conspiracy against Eland. In Cromwell Bothan Wood, Adam Beaumont seized the bridle of Eland's horse causing it to go back on its haunches. Eland jumped off and drew his sword but was cut down by the four younger men. these four men were not happy with just killing Eland so they killed his son. Eland's son was shot with an arrow at the Elland Mill dam while he was traveling with his family to church for Palm Sunday. Quarmby was killed in the fray, William Lockwood escaped, and Adam Beaumont joined the Knights of Rhodes and went to fight in Hungary against the Turks. Adam was killed in Spain in 1350.
