About Robert de Verdun

Robert de Verdun is believed to be the son of Roger de Verdun, Governor of Ambriences Castle. He was born c.990, possibly in Seine-Maritime, France. He is believed to be the father of Robert de Verdun, who took the name d'Estouteville and began a long line of d'Estoutevilles.

The Norman family of Verdun, natives of Avranchin, were minor landholders in Normandy until the time of William the Conqueror. The Verduns who followed William to England were rewarded with land and manors in England. Most noted of the Verduns so honored was Bertram I de Verdun. In the Domesday Book (written in 1086), Bertram de Verdun holds the land and the manor of Farnham Royal in Buckinghamshire, held before by princess Goda of England.

It is not proven how this Robert de Verdun or his father Roger are related to Bertram de Verdun.
