About Rockford Ray Riggs, Sr.

The above photo was found on Family and depicts the family of Don Frederick Riggs and his wife Mary West Riggs, and their children, clockwise from lower left, Ruby Lapriel, Don Lynwood Riggs, Rockford Ray Riggs and Mary Veon Riggs. It was probably taken sometime in the 1960's, since Rockford passed away at the age of 60 years old in 1971. He was born January 15, 1911, in Snowflake, Navajo County, Arizona.

In the 1920 U.S. Federal Census, the family was living in Twin Falls, Idaho, and Don and Mary were both 36 years old, and their children were listed as: Alice, 14, Don Lynwood, 10, Rockford Ray, 8, Ruby Lapriel, 7, and Mary Veon Riggs, 3 years and 8 months old. Don Frederick was working as a traveling salesman for a plumbing and heating company. Don and Mary and all their children were born in Arizona except the two youngest girls, Ruby and Mary, who were born in Utah, so the family would have been living in Idaho for about 7 or 8 years at that time.

I could not find Don Frederick Riggs in the previous 1910 census, but in the earlier 1900 census, he was living in Concho, Apache County, Arizona Territory, with his parents, Charles H. and Nancy M. Riggs, who were 53 and 45 years old, and their children were Charles W., 23, Almon R., 18, Don F., 16, Julie A., 13, Mary A., 10, Ethel M., 8, and Brigham E., 5 months old. When Don Fredrick Riggs completed his World War I Draft Registration Card on September 12, 1918, at the Bear Lake County, Idaho, Draft Board in Paris, he described himself as being tall, slender with light blue eyes and light brown hair. He was living in Cokeville, Lincoln County, Wyoming, and was 35 years old, having been born June 10, 1883. His occupation was that of a farmer, and his wife Mary West Riggs was listed as his nearest living relative.

In the 1930 U.S. Federal Census, Don Fredrick Riggs was living in Vernon, Apache County, Arizona, alone, and next door are his parents, Charles H., 82, and Nancy M, 75 years old. Don had been married for 24 years but his family was not listed with him in this census. Both Don and his father Charles were listed as farmers on a ranch that they owned.

In the 1930 U.S. Federal Census for Seattle, Washington, Rockford was 19 years old and living with his mother, Mary, 45, older brother, Don, 21, and sisters Ruby LaPriel, 17, and Veon, 14, however, Mary West Riggs was listed as a widow, but they must have been separated for some reason sinceher husband Don was living in Arizona near his parents at the time. Mary was working as a saleslady in a department store, Don as an automobile salesman, and Rockford as a salesman in a shoe store. Neither of the younger girls are working and may still have been in school. However, by 1931, it appears that Mary W. Riggs had rejoined her husband and they are living at 414 Madrona in Phoenix, and Don was listed as a cattleman.

In the 1940 census, Don and Mary were 56 years old, and living in Vernon, Arizona, with their daughter Veon Riggs, 22, and adopted son, Curtis Finch Riggs, 14. Don had achieved 2 years of a college education, Mary, 3 years, and his daughter, 4 years, and Curtis was still in school. The family had been living in the same place in 1935 except for Curtis, who was living in Provo, Utah. Don was a farmer and a cattle rancher, and their daughter, Veon, was working as a school teacher in a public grade school. For the 35 weeks Veon worked 35 hours per week in 1939, she earned $1,040.00 which works out to be about 85 cents per hour. The family owned their own farm which was valued at $3,000.

In 1940, Rockford, 29, was married to Julia W., 27, and their children were Rockford Roy Riggs, 7, Westlyn C., 5 and Larry B., 4, and they were living 2 houses away from Rockford's parents. Rockford was working as the manager of a grocery store, and worked 60 hours a week for 52 weeks the previous year, 1939. They owned their own home which was valued at $2,000. Rockford achieved 4 years of high school, as did his wife, Julia.

In a 1948 City Directory for Phoenix, Rockford and Julia were living at 2235 Vista and their business was Riggs Realty Company. Don and Mary were also living in Phoenix, Arizona, and they owned a company called Arizona House Movers, which was located at 2221 N. 38th Street, and the telephone number was 23927.

In another City Directory listings for 1951-1952, Rockford and his wife, Julia, were living at 3006 N. 17th Drive, and they still owned a company known as Riggs & Company, and it appears they also owned the Merryland Apartments. There is another listing for Riggs & Company, which was formerly known as Riggs Realty, located at 2001 E. McDowell. Their son, Rockford R. Riggs, student, also living 3006 N. 17th Drive, with his parents, Rockford and Julia.

A 1956 U.S. City Directory lists Don and Mary living at 2946 N. 17th Drive, and Don was listed as being retired. Their phone number was AL 4-3542. Rockford and his wife, Julia, were living at his parents previous home on N. 17th Drive, and were isted as the owner of R.R. Riggs Real Estate and Insurance Company. They were still living there in 1957

Don Fredrick Riggs passed away at the age of 82 on November 27, 1965, in Phoenix, Arizona. According to his Find A Grave memorial, he was buried at the Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery in Phoenix, and was the son of Charles Hamblin Littlefield Riggs and Nancy Marie Babbit, the husband of Mary West and father of Don Lynwood, Rockford Ray, Ruby LaPriel and Mary Veon Riggs.

Mary West Riggs passed away on August 8, 1967, at the age of 83 from a heart attack while in San Gabriel, Los Angeles County, California, during an automobile trip from Arizona to San Francisco for a family reunion. This is according to information written about Mary in her book by her daughter, who accompanied her mother on the family reunion automobile trip.

Rockford Ray Riggs passed away at the age of 60 on November 19, 1972, in Mesa, Arizona, and was buried in Green Acres Memorial Park in Scottsdale, Arizona. His wife, Julia Ann Whiting Riggs, passed away October 17, 1989, also in Arizona, and was buried with her husband in Scottsdale. She was the daughter of Charles R. Whiting and Jane Cadwallader Johnson Whiting. Rockford and Julia had six known children.
