He is perhaps most infamous for directing 1987's critically panned The Garbage Pail Kids Movie which Doug Walker (The Nostalgia Critic) said was the worst film he ever seen.

Directed episodes of TV series like The Dennis Day Show, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, The Dukes of Hazzard, Mister Ed, The Bob Cummings Show, and The New Phil Silvers Show.

He was producer of TV shows such as My Mother the Car and Supertrain, and wrote the story for the 1988 film Sunset.

Rodney "Rod" Amateau passed away in 2003.
