About Roderick David McLay

The Calumet News, Jan 8 1896, Wednesday.

Accident at Lake Linden-
This morning shortly after starting up work in the wash house in the Calumet stamp mill one of the belts came off and in trying to replace, a young man named David McClay got his clothes caught in the shafting and before the machinery could be stopped the shaft had made very many revolutions, of course carrying McClay with it. As soon as possible, McClay was extricated and taken to the hospital when it was found that both arms and legs and several ribs were broken in addition which he received internal injuries of so serious a nature that the physicians say his case is hopeless.
McClay, who is about 16 years of age, is a son of Murdock McClay and cousin to Mr. Ross, of Ryan's store, and had we understand, only worked a few shifts in the Calumet mill although he had worked for a short time in the Hecla.
