Brief overview:

Roelf (52), was shot in the head in his bed, at his agricultural smallholding is Rooiwal, north Pretoria, on 6th August 2020 around 01h30, after three armed perpetrators gained entry into the house.

Around 01h30 a neighbour, Marius Pretorius, heard dogs barking, after which he heard Roelf's mother, Lucy (77), shouting. “I then heard my neighbour shouting, ‘help, help, he is dead, my son is dead’,” Pretorius said. He rushed over to assist and took her to his house, and then called the North Pretoria police, who arrived swiftly.

According to Marius, Roelf's mother told him that three armed males entered their house and dragged her out of her room into the hallway before hitting and kicking her. She lay on the floor until they had left.

One of the other neighbour's managed to fire off some gunshots, which lead to one of the perpetrators being wounded. “There is a blood trail from the bedroom through the hallway leading outside into the field,” said Marius.

The community, along with private security and policing forums gathered together to help look for the suspects. The police sent in a helicopter and a dog unit when daylight broke.

It is reported that only a cellphone and a laptop was taken.
