He was called Roland Burleigh in Stephen Willard's genealogy booklet on Alexander Hamilton Willard.845

Roland Rudolph Willard began military service on 3 Jun 1832 in Captain DeLong's Company, Iowa Militia, for the Black Hawk War.846 He ended military service on 20 Aug 1832. The Iowa Militia refers to the county there in the Territory, (still Michigan Terr.; it became Wisconsin Terr. in 1836), not the later to be created state.847

John Rowland Crawford sold (with Christiana D. Crawford his wife, and Rodolph R. Willard) the SE quarter of Section 3 in Township 2 of Range 1E to Alexander Hamilton Willard Sr 14 Oct 1837 in Iowa County, Wisconsin Territory.848

Willard) the North part of the NW quarter of the NE quarter of Section 3 in T2 R1E containing 27.96 acres for $100 to Alexander Hamilton Willard Jr 10 Jun 1844 in Iowa County, Wisconsin Territory.851 Roland Rudolph Willard bought for $50 the undivided half of the south half of the West half of the NW quarter of Section 35 in T3 R1E containing 20 acres as the undivided half of 40 acres from Daniel Griffin and Parmelia Ann Griffin [on D] in Iowa county, Wisconsin Territory.852

Alexander Hamilton Willard Sr (and Elenor his wife) sold the West half of the SE quarter of the SW quarter of Section 3 T2N R1E containing 20 acres for $50 to Roland Rudolph Willard 11 Aug 1845 in Iowa County, Wisconsin Territory.853 Roland Rudolph Willard bought a five acre lot on the west side of Platteville bounded by lines as follows. To wit: commencing on the north side of Main Street 242 feet due West from the SE corner of said 5 acre lot which said lot was purchased by Mitchell of John A. Rountree thence running north 264 feet thence West 66 feet thence South 132 feet thence East 44 feet thence South 132 feet thence East 22 feet along the street to the place of beginning, for $42 from Rev. Samuel Mitchell 16 Mar 1846 in Platteville, Grant Co., Wisconsin Territory. Samuel Mitchell Jr appeared before George W. Lakin, notary public in Grant County.854

Land Buy: Roland Rudolph Willard, called bought with John Rowland Crawford as tenants in common the SE quarter of Section 3 T2N R1E consisting of 160 acres from Mineral Point General Land Office 26 Apr 1847 in Iowa County, Michigan Territory.855

Roland Rudolph Willard sold for $63.50 the parcel of land bounded by a line commencing 30 rods due East of and from NW corner of the NW quarter of the SW quarter of Section 15 T2N of R1E of the 4th principal meridian, and running due east 30 rods from thence south 80 rods from thence west 30 rods from thence north 80 rods to the place of beginning being in rectangular parallel of ____ strip of land extends north and south the width of the said quarter quarter Section and the west side of which strip of land is bounded by a line 30 rods east of the western boundery line of said section 15 and running parallel thereto and said parallel of land containing 15 acres more or less to William Parker 19 May 1847 in Elk Grove township, Lafayette county, Wisconsin Territory.856

Joel Willard sold for $100: the undivided half of the SW quarter of the SW quarter of Section 3 T2 R1E; also the undivided half of the NE quarter of the SE quarter of Section 3 T2N R1E, consisting of 40 acres to Roland Rudolph Willard 18 Feb 1849 in Lafayette county, Wisconsin.857

He and his brother Joel sailed to California via the Cape.858

Austin James Willard (with Alexander Jr, Joel, and Lewis) bought for $2,000: the East quarter of Lot #3 in the square between K and L Seventh and Eighth streets by 20 feet on K street and running back to the alley 160 feet bounded on the east by lot of Dr. McKenzie, on the West by lot of Prettyman Barroll & Co from William Grove Deal 19 May 1851 in Sacramento City, Sacramento county, California.859

By 13 Jun 1851 Roland Rudolph Willard and Joel Willard resided at at Sacramento county, California, as evidenced by the land transaction of the date.860 Joel Willard (and Rolin R. Willard) sold the SW quarter of the SW quarter of Section 3 T2N R1E; also the NE quarter of the SE quarter of Section 3 T2N R1E consisting of 80 acres for $1000.

Both Joel and Roland are "of Sacramento County, California." to Otis Feathers 13 Jun 1851 in Lafayette county, Wisconsin.861

Land Buy: Austin James Willard bought Roland's interest in Lot #3 for $500 from Roland Rudolph Willard 6 Nov 1851 in Sacramento City, Sacramento county, California.862

1852 Census: Roland Rudolph Willard appeared on the census of 1852 at Sacramento county, California, (it doesn't say but he's probably on his ranch near Georgetown. Living with him are G. W. Wakefield and his boys; and his sister Christiana and her family).863

On April 13, 1852 Alexander Willard, (Roland's father), gave Power of Attorney to Elijah Bayley to sell his Platteville town lot for him. "It is further understood that said Bailey [sic] is further authorized to make sale of the two adjoining lots of ground now belonging to Roland Willard and also to pledge himself that as soon as a sale is affected and a correspondance can be had, shall Roland Willard make and execute a good and sufficient deed to the same."

This deed was given on 6 Mar 1854. Roland was of Sacramento County, California at the time.864

Senator Augustus Caesar Dodge wrote a letter dated on 1 Apr 1853 to Acting Commissioner Samuel Cole Esq. at at Washington, D.C.. Sir: I enclose the application of Alexander and Rolin Willard for Bounty Land. They are especial friends relatives of mine, and you will oblige me by issuing the warrants as soon as your convenience will admit of. Very Respectfully Yours, A. C. Dodge[return address is Senate Chamber].865

Regarding Black Hawk War Bounty Land:

"On this 31 day of May A. D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty six personally appeared before me a county clerk... Rolin R. Willard aged thirty nine years a resident of Sacramento County in the State of California, and being duly sworn according to law declares that he is the identical Rolin R. Willard who was a Private in the company commanded by Captain DeLong in the ___ Regiment of Illinois or Wisconsin Militia, commanded by Col. Henry Dodge in the Black War of 1832, that he volunteered at Iowa County Wisconsin Territry on or about the first day of June A.D. 1832 for the term of the war, and continued in actual service in said war for fourteen days, that he has heretofore made application for bounty land under the act of September 28th 1850 and received a land warrant No. 87204 for forty acres, which he herewith returns.

He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the additional bounty land to which he may be entitled under the act approved the 3rd day of March 1835. He also declares that he has never applied for nor received under this or any other act of congress any bounty land warrant. except the one above mentioned, and appoints the Hon. Henry Dodge of Wisconsin, his attorney to receive the bounty land warrant which he claims as aforesaid.

We Alexander Willard resident of Yolo County Cal. and John R. Crawford resident of Yolo County Cal. upon our oaths declare that the foregoing declaration was signed and acknowledge by Rolin R. Willard in our presence and that we believe from the statements of the applicant and from personal knowledge of him and the services he rendered at the time they were rendered that he is the identical person he represents himself to be.

"Know all men by these presents that we Lewis A. Willard as principal and L. S. Nevins, Jr. R. Crawford, James Whitcomb & J. W. Pugh as sureties are held and formally bound unto the state of California in the full and final sum of forty thousand dollars to the payment of which well and finally to be made we bind ourselves and our heirs, executors and administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presents signed with our hand and sealed with our seals this the 13th day of June A.D. 1859...&quot.867 Roland Rudolph Willard died intestate and Lewis Augustus Willard was appointed administrator; the ranch was near Georgetown (modern Franklin), Sacramento county, California. The real estate of 960 acres was appraised at $8,500 and personal property valued at $10,453. The funeral costs $93 (for a black walnut coffin, silk shroud, coffin case, and 5 yards of black crape). Real estate taxes for 1859 were $153.50; G. W. Wakefield was paid $25.50 for labor on the ranch; Alexander Willard the heir was paid $81.50 living expenses until the estate could be settled; Lewis A. Willard was paid $80 for horses. C. W. Ganong was paid $131; and there were a few others paid for services rendered. A "Dr. Willard" owed $37.50 to the estate; David Billup owed $450. He paid $210 cash and $245 worth of cows. P. Bequette owed $600; James Giles owed $100. The stock on the ranch included 75 mares, 2 stallions, 140 colts, 7 cows, 4 calves, 2 heifers, 2 steers, 20 hogs, and 29 shotes.868

Sacramento California, Sacramento Bee newspaper 1859, Obituaries, Marriages, Births has the following death notice:

Roland R. Willard, D.[ied] June 11, 1859, notice appeared June 15, 1859.

     1860 Census: Jackson Willard, an Indian, appeared on the census of 20 Jun 1860 in the household of Alexander Hamilton Willard Sr and Eleanor McDonald at Elk Grove Post Office, Franklin township, Sacramento county, California, the late Roland Willard's ranch, called "Jackson Willard", age 12, born in "Cal."870
     Jackson was not a legal son of Roland. According to depositions in Roland's probate papers, Roland had no family and his father was his legal heir.871

5 Jan 1841 Land Buy: Roland Rudolph Willard, called bought with John Rowland Crawford as tenants in common the NW quarter of the NE quarter of Section 3 T2N R1E consisting of 47.96 acres from Mineral Point General Land Office 5 Jan 1841 in Iowa County, Wisconsin Territory.19

10 Jun 1844 Land Sale: John Rowland Crawford sold (with Christiana D. Crawford his wife, and Rodolph R. Willard) the North part of the NW quarter of the NE quarter of Section 3 in T2 R1E containing 27.96 acres for $100 to Alexander Hamilton Willard Jr 10 Jun 1844 in Iowa County, Wisconsin Territory.20
