R. E. Bolling, 74, District Banker, Dies in Hospital
Head of Liberty National Was Brother of Mrs. Woodrow Wilson.
Folfe [sic] E. Bolling, one of the District's most prominent bankers and a brother of Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, died at Emergency Hospital early yesterday morning. Mr. Bolling, who was 74, had been a patient there since December 13.
On December 18, 1931, Mr. Bolling was named president of the Liberty National Bank, after a varied and successful banking career, which began when he was cashier of the Exchange & Deposit Bank, Abingdon, VA, where he was born August 22, 1861.
From Abingdon Mr. Bolling went to the posts of cashier in the Lynchburg (Va.) National Bank, the Flat Top National Bank of Bluefield, Va. and of the First National Bank in Baltimore. Next he became vice president of the Chatham & Phoenix National Bank, New York City. He acted as manager of a new branch of this bank which was opened August 15, 1916. Later he was taken into the main office in the Singer Building.
He opened two Panama banks as branches of the now defunct Commercial National Bank of Washington. Later these two branches were bought by New York interests, which are now owned by the Chase National Bank of New York.
After becoming president of the Commercial National Bank here, Mr. Bolling went to the Chatham and Phoenix three years later and then returned to Washington on April 1, 1923, to join the Merchants Bank & Trust Co.
After several years as vice president with this bank, he was elected its president, following retirement of Peter A. Drury. When the Merchants consolidated with the Federal-American, Mr. Bolling was made a vice president and put in charge of banking offices in the Southern Building.
Subsequently he was elected president of the Liberty National Bank, succeeding the late Edward J. McQuade.
Surviving Mr. Bolling are his widow, Mrs. Annie Stuart Litchfield Bolling, and one daughter, Mrs. Jorge E. Boyd, of Panama; three brothers, Randolph, Julian and R. Wilmer Bolling and three sisters, Mrs. Wilson, Miss Bertha Bolling and Mrs. Alexander Galt, all of Washington.
Funeral arrangements had not been completed late yesterday.
