About Rolluf Anderson

Rolluf Anderson, the fifth son of a family of six children, was born May 20, 1842, in Meråker, Trondhjem's Stift, Norway, the son of Anders Olson Oien and Ingeborg Larsdatter. Norwegian records list his name as Rollaug. Rolluf emigrated to the United States in 1866, arriving in early August of that year. He first came to Koshkonong, Wisconsin, where he remained for three years, working for farmers in the summer time, and during the winter months, attended the first Hauge's Synod school at Albion, Wisconsin. In 1869, he took a homestead in Minnehaha County, Dakota Territory, and became the first taxpayer of the county. In 1871, he was married to Anna Forthon. On October 6, 1898, Rolluf died very suddenly from a hemorrhage. Rolluf Anderson was a firm believer in education and sacrificed much in order that his children might receive some learning. The three oldest daughters attended the State Normal School at Madison, after which they became school teachers. All of his sons attended the Red Wing Seminary at some time. The oldest son, Olai, became a minister; and the second, Robert, a medical missionary. The others did not complete their courses. The Centennial History of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids 1874-1974 notes that in 1869 "Thompson Brothers - Gunder, Ole, Peter M. and Gunerius, and Rolluf Anderson were among the new settlers who were instrumental in establishing the Stordahl Church." Dell Rapids was founded by the Rice brothers in 1871 - two years later! When formal organization of the church was completed in 1876, Rolluf Anderson was elected secretary and treasurer and an elder.
