About Romulus Morgan Hammond, Jr

R. M. "Buster" Hammond, Jr., born April 26 1910 and passed away on September 8, 2007 Mr. "Buster" Hammond 97, of Memphis, owner of Buster's Liquors and Wines for over 50 years was a graduate of Central High in 1929. He was an entrepreneur, business owner, and an avid fisherman who never missed an opportunity to drop a hook in the water. In his early career, Mr. Hammond opened one of the most modern full service stations at that time on Madison Avenue under Pan American Gasoline Co., after being in the enterprising industry for a few years in Myrtle Beach S.C. and Nashville. Mr. Hammond went on to spend time with the historic Hollywood film row as a sales representative for MGM Studios. By the late 1940's Buster opened HamKirk's, a chain of drive-in styled groceries, with then good friend Tom Kirk. It was in 1954 when Mr. Hammond found his calling by establishing Buster's Liquors on South Bellevue. In 1968, the business moved to its present day location on the corner of Poplar and Highland, where for many years customers came to recognize him as the "man in the chair" directing operations. Buster enjoyed the outdoors spending much of his time fishing and living on Horseshoe Lake, AR. Mr. Hammond always took great pride in his appearance and his home of 50 years at the corner of Goodlett and Southern with his distinctive hedges lining the drive. His signature charm and smile will sorely be missed. Mr. Hammond died at Baptist East Hospital on Saturday evening. Mr. Hammond was preceded by his wife, Martha Gene Hammond and his two brothers, Henry Hammond and Mark Hammond. He is survived by his son, R.M. "Rommy" Hammond III and wife Gay; three grandchildren, R.M. "Morgan" Hammond IV, Anastasia Hammond Carter, and Joshua Perkins Hammond; two great-grandchildren, R.M. "Bear" Hammond V and Andrew Nash Hammond all of Memphis. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 11 at Memorial Park Funeral Home with visitation on Monday evening from 5-8 p.m. The Hammond family request that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Rachel's Kids Inc., 2882 Barris Drive, Memphis TN. 38132.
