Ronald Drake (1943 – 2012)
Brief overview:
Ronald (69), a retired firefighter, was stabbed to death, at his home in Ashburton, Pietermaritzburg, KZN, on 19th May 2012. Ronald was sitting on his veranda reading his Bible and his partner, Patricia Semple, was asleep in the bedroom when the attackers appeared on their property. Bheki Wellington Ngcobo (50), who posed as a doctor promising tenders, had met with his nephew, Mbongeni Mchunu (18), as he planned to rob Ronald's firearm. Ronald's dog started barking and he went to investigate. “Mbongeni went straight to Drake and started stabbing him. I managed to chase the dog away and went to help Mbongeni. I took out my knife and stabbed Drake a few times in his chest,” Ngcobo said. The attackers then went to the bedroom and tied up Patricia's hands and feet, demanding to know where the firearm was. They searched the house and found a cellphone and a LCD television, which they took.
The post-mortem revealed that Ronald was stabbed at least 10 times in the chest and stomach, and that the stab wounds had punctured both his lungs and his heart.

- Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Isaac Madondo sentenced Bheki Ngcobo (20), of Hammarsdale, to 25 years' imprisonment for the murder and 15 years for aggravated robbery. He ordered that the sentences run concurrently for an effective 25-year term.
