From page #116 in "History of Christmas Island Parish":
Rory McNeil (Murdock) came to Pictou in 1802. A few years later, he settled on a lot of land east of Christmas Island where his grand-son, James D. McNeil, lived until his death a few years ago. When the McKenzies and others came to the country in 1821, Rory was a staunch farmer. He had four cows, two horses and quite a number of sheep together with good crops of wheat and potatoes. As his knowledge of wood chopping, farming, stock raising and other matters was superior to that of the newcomers, his advice was sought by many as to how and when this or that should be done. He thus became a sort of ruler in the place; hence the surname, “Governor," by which he was called by his friends.....
This Rory McNeil married Ann McNeil (Nic Gille) Issue: — Catherine, who died young, and Elizabeth, who married Donald McNeil (Eoin).
