Rory van Rensburg (1971 - 2002)

Brief overview:

Rory (31), was shot dead on farm Uitzoek, Camperdown, KZN, on 10th June 2002. The young farmer was shot dead here on Monday when he and his parents were attacked by robbers on their farm.

Supt. Piet Scott of the Pietermaritzburg homicide and robbery unit says a domestic worker was first overpowered outside the house. Then Rory's mother, Mrs. Sandra van Rensburg (57), was attacked and forced into a bedroom where she was assaulted. Her 63-year-old husband, Alexander Cameron, was in bed after a back surgery and was stabbed in the hip.

The robbers obtained the keys to a firearm safe and tied the couple up before moving to a outside room where they shot young Van Rensburg. They then loaded a lot of stuff including six loaded firearms on the couple's bakkie and drove away. One of the boy's friends arrived there unnoticed and saw a man taking things out of a closet. He realized that everything was wrong and went to a neighbor's farm for help. "The neighbor arrived soon after and started shooting at the robbers, who climbed into the bakkie and tried to flee. They crashed into a donga, jumped out of the bakkie and ran away. All the stolen goods were recovered. Scott said.

  • 29/09/2002: "Meanwhile, the North West police are still searching for the killers of a 74-year-old farmer, Henry P.J. van Rensburg, well known as “Ramatswele”, who lived on his Rapoelie farm near Delareyville, and was shot and killed on 7th August 2002. The motive of the killing is not yet known and the police are still investigating. Police say Van Rensburg, who was alone during the attack, allegedly pressed the panic button on his farm. The security company he is contracted to could not locate him by phone and alerted the police. The police found him alive on his bed, having been shot twice. He, however, died before emergency services arrived at the scene. Police say only a cellphone was missing and some rooms were ransacked. His workers have expressed concerns about who would hire them because Van Rensburg was their only employer in the area."
