About Rosalie La Flesche Farley

Rosalie La Flesche Farley was a native American activist and managed Omaha tribal financial affairs.

Rosalie helped negotiate grazing treaties on un-allocated land to generate revenue and helped tribal members with their finances, including managing donations sent from Americans across the country. She also worked with an ethnologist from the University of Pennsylvania to collect traditions and stories from the tribes.

Her father, Omaha chief Joseph La Flesche (aka, Iron Eye), emphasized education for all his children; several went to schools and colleges in the East. They were encouraged to contribute to their people.

Rosalie's sister, Susette La Flesche, was an activist and nationally known speaker on issues of Indian rights and reform.

Her sister, Susan La Flesche, was the first Native American woman to become a western-style doctor; she treated the Omaha for years.

Her half-sibling, Francis La Flesche, became an accomplished ethnologist.
