About Rose Catherine Berman
Rose Catherine (Pierson) Berman was a 39-year-old victim of the Hartford Circus Fire, which broke out on July 6, 1944 and killed at least 167 people.
Raised in Meriden, Connecticut, Rose was the daughter of Russian Jewish immigrants. She was the wife of Hyman Berman, the owner of Berman's Department Store, with whom she had one child, daughter Judith. The family lived at 24 Stillman Road in Wethersfield. An alumna of the New Britain Normal School (now Central Connecticut State University, Rose was a teacher at Meriden High School -- from which she had graduated in 1922 -- from 1927 to 1934.
Rose was found deceased on the circus grounds on July 6, as was Judith. They were buried in a joint service officiated by Hartford rabbi Morris Silverman on July 9.
