LOVINGSTON – Mrs. Ruby Harris Horsley Turpin, 85, died Tuesday evening at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, N.C. She was born June 21, 1900, in Nelson County, a daughter of the late Joseph Coleman Harris and Ada Harris Harris.
Mrs. Turpin was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, former owner and operator of Village View Orchards and Lovingston Hotel and Tea Room. She was a member of the Lovingston Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Lovingston Business and Professional Women's Club and the Lovingston Garden Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Katherine Horsley Booker Davidson of Lynchburg and Mrs. Ruby Anne Horsley Wygal of Wilmington, Del.; three sons, Ralph E. Turpin Jr. and John Cabell Horsley, both of Lovingston, and Dr. Thomas M. Horsley Jr. of Elizabeth City, N.C.; one brother, Mathew Harris of Lynchburg; three half-sisters, Nellie H. Harris and Elizabeth H. Knight, both of Faber, and Betty H. Baker of Lovingston; one half-brother, Calvin C. Harris of Faber; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was married twice and preceded in death by both husbands, Thomas Martin Horsley Sr. and Ralph Essex Turpin Sr.
A service will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston by the Rev. John P. Campbell. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. Friends will be received in the residence of Ralph Turpin Jr., Front St., Lovingston, and in Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, at any time. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may take the form of contributions to Nelson Memorial Library Fund, Lovingston, Va. 22949.
