About Russell Andrews

Russell J. Andrews married Mary/Maria Hemmenway Jan. 24, 1822 at Plymouth, Litchfield, Connecticut. (Connecticut Vital records prior to 1850). Afterward, they must have moved to Onondaga Co., New York. Rev. Charles C. Hemenway was pastor of the nearby Methodist church at Auburn, New York. It was originally organized as the Washington Congregational Religious Society of Otisco organized 1804 by Rev. Hugh Wallace.

Russell is found living at Stephentown, Rensselaer New York in 1840. Daughter Calista was born at Stephentown in 1825.

From 1818 to 1939, nearby Auburn was home to Auburn Theological Seminary, once one of the preeminent theological seminaries in the United States providing missionaries and clergymen to towns all over the burgeoning west.

Living in Otisco, Onondaga, New York by 1830.

Background:

Lineage from the Bigelow Society:

341. Thomas6 ANDREWS (Bartholomew5, Elisha4, Samuel3, Samuel2, WILLIAM1) was born May 17, 1762 in Wallingford, CT, and died Bef. 1815.

The Andrews family, originally from either Wallingford or Meriden/Cheshire Connecticut,( also pioneered Vermont and Maine), frequently spelled their name "Andrus" "Andross" "Andruss" , Andreus or "Andrews". Russell always spells his name "Andrews" and is always born in CT. At the time of the Revolution, some of the Andrews family went to Canda. Some returned.

In 1830 Russell is enumerated at Otisco, Onondaga, New York. (Eber and Rys Gaylord, Miles and Julius Bishop, Levi Deming, Uriah Fish(Fiske) and Josiah Hall the 2nd are allied families). He is a member of the Congregational Church of Otisco where his children are baptised.

In 1840, Russell is enumerated on the Elijah Rust parcel. Elijah Rust, son of the first settler of the area, Chauncey Rust who came from Northhampton, Mass. Other first settlers were Johnathan B. Nichols, Oliver and Daniel Tuttle, Tyler Frisbie, Alpheus Boutelle. Johnathan B. Nichols, Charles and Benoni Merriman, Solomon Judd, Josiah Clark, Daniel Bennett, Elias and Jared Thayer, Samuel Elethrop, Samuel, Ebenezer and Luther French, Otis Baker, Nathaniel Parsons, Erastus Clapp.

Death 1850:

It appears there may have been some kind of disease outbreak in Otisco in 1849-1850, as many residents and their children appear on the burial records. An Oscar E. Andrews, age 24 is also reported dying in March 1850, immediately after Russell's entry; probabaly he was Russell's son, as no other Andrews family is found as early settlers. Also, Russell was just enumerated living in Ashford, N. Y. the same year, so he may have been visiting when he died.

Russell is found in the 1840 census in Otisco, Onondaga County, New York. ( One female 40-50, one female under 5, one male 40-50, two males 5-10, and one under 5 are living with him.) He is living next or near allied families of William Gaylord, Appolas King, Levi Deming, Isaac Bennett, Lucius Graves and George and Julius A Bishop, all whose ancestors lived in Vermont. There are a total of 32 families in Otisco at this time.

Russell Andrews is found in the 1850 census living next to Ezra Bigelow ( who later marries his daughter Calista) in Ashford, Cattaraugus, N.Y., and is married to a " Sally" Andrews. He states his age as 52 and birth in Connecticut and he is a farmer. They were enumerated at Ashford, Cattaraugus, New York. Calista, his daughter, is listed in his household). He is listed with who appears a wife " Sally " Andrews, age 51 and child Henry. Henry is 8 years old and listed as born in Pennsylvania, so the child's parents must have moved from Pennsylvania, possibly from Crawford County where his sister Ruby was living, to Ashford sometime in 1843-1850. Russell dies in 1850 at Otisco.

History of Otisco: These early settlers came "with the Bible in one hand and the spelling book in the other," and laid the foundations for the development of a virtuous and vigorous people. The first religious meeting held in the town was at the house of Chauncey Rust in September, 1801, and from that time they were steadily maintained, and on the 9th of May, 1808, Rev. Hugh Wallis, of Pompey, presiding, Charles Merriman, Rachel Merriman, Samuel French, Benjamin Cowles, Phineas Sparks, Oliver Tuttle, Abigail Tuttle, Ebenezer French, jr., Amos Cowles, Luther French, and Solomon Judd, organized the Congregational church of Otisco, and the society adopted as it (sic) name, "The Washington Religious Society of Otisco." Its first church edifice was a frame structure standing on the farm now owned by Irving W. Bardwell, a short distance north of Otisco Center. The only means for heating this building during the whole time it was used for worship was by the use of little foot stoves brought thither from the scattered homes of the congregation. In the year 1816 a larger church was built in the center of the village on a desirable site which the society still retains. From the building of the second church down to 1855 it would be difficult to find a rural community more general in attendance at church, a larger and better trained choir, a more generally attended Sunday school, or a larger or more intelligent society of young people. In the fall of 1805 Rev. George Colton was called as their first minister, but he remained only a few months. December 9, 1807, Rev. William J. Wilcox, of Sandisfield, Mass., was invited to the pastorate which he accepted and continued until March 15, 1821. The subsequent pastors of the church have been Revs. Charles Johnson, July 19, 1821, to September 3, 1823. Richard S. Corning, November 15, 1824, for nine succeeding years. Levi Parsons, May 1, 1834, supply one year. Levi Griswold, stated supply nearly a year and pastor two years. Sidney Mills, stated supply two years from April 1, 1839. Thaddeus Pomeroy, two years from December 14, 1841. Clement Lewis, stated supply two years. Addison K. Strong, supply in June, 1846, and pastor nine years. Levi Parsons (son of the before mentioned pastor of that name), two years. Medad Pomeroy, five years from 1858, succeeded in the following order by J. M. Jenks, Alvin Baker, James S. Baker, Isaac O. Best, R. C. Allison, Edward Strong, John Brash, Henry B. Hudson, J. J Munro, J. E. Beecher, F. B. Fraser and Addison K. Strong again, who returned to the church early in 1894 and remained until his death. The present church was built in 1892. The membership is 110.

Other early religious socities located at Otisco were:

In 1824, meeting at the Lake House, owned by David Moore, a religious society named The Amber Religious society formed, which was non-denominational. Miles Bishop, Barber Kenyon, and Samuel Kenyon were chosen to head the building committee. Robert Kenyon and Isaac Briggs joined with the building committee to form the trustees. Only the Methodists kept regular services.

In 1832, a class of 28 people formed a church called the Maple Grove Methodist Episcopal Church, organized by Peres Case, a local preacher. The site for their church was donated by Amos Abbot. They worshipped at the Seeley schoolhouse until 1850, when a church was erected. Warner Abbott, Lewis Pickett, and John Case trustees.

In 1870, St. Patrick's church was a mission church in Otisco Village.
