About Ruth Newhall
Newspaper Editor, Author. A native of Berkeley, California, Ruth Waldo graduated from the University of California Berkeley in 1931. In 1933 she married Scott Newhall and soon afterwards was hired as a secretary by the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper. She later rose up to become a reporter while her husband would go on to serve as Executive Editor of the paper from 1952 until 1971. In 1963, she and her husband purchased the Newhall Signal newspaper and would own it until 1978. She served as editor of the paper from 1970 until 1978 and again from 1985 until 1988. In addition to newspapers, she was also an author and wrote books such as "The Folger Way: Coffee Pioneering Since 1850" (1961), San Francisco's Enchanted Palace" (1967), and "A California Legend: The Newhall Land and Farming Company" (1992).
