Ruth was the first born of eight children of Solomon and Hannah Tharp. She was born in New Jersey before her father entered the service during the Revolutionary War. She moved, with her parents to the Shenandoah area in Cullpepper County, Virginia near the Rapidan River. They were devoute Baptists and with other pioneers of similar religious backgrounds, emigrated to North Carolina. She continued to move with her family to Bedford County, West Virginia about1799 and then to Champain County,Ohio, settling at King's Creek before 1811, and then by 1820 to Logan County, Ohio. She married John Reed and had seven children.
